Heating and Cooling Repair in the Bronx

Ephraim Heating & Air repairs boilers, radiators, furnaces, central air conditioning and window and through-wall units across the Bronx.

When the heat goes out, the cause is usually one part. On a steam or hot water boiler it is a low water cutoff, a water feeder, a circulator pump, a zone valve, a clogged burner nozzle or a radiator vent. On a gas furnace the usual suspects are the igniter, flame sensor, pressure switch and blower; see furnace repair in the Bronx.

When the cooling stops in July, a central AC system usually has a failed capacitor, a burned contactor, a seized fan motor or a clogged drain. A window or through-wall unit usually has a dirty coil, a frozen front coil, a bad capacitor or a blocked drain pan; see window AC repair.

Boiler Not Firing in Cold Weather?

A boiler that has stopped with the building going cold, water on the boiler room floor or a relief valve spraying is an emergency call. The common causes are a burner in lockout, low water in a steam boiler, a waterlogged expansion tank or a seized circulator.

Details are on the emergency boiler repair page, or call (914) 573-5224.

Bronx Buildings and the Heat They Run On

West Farms and East Tremont are made up mostly of five and six story tenements. In a walk-up heated by a steam boiler, age brings the same problems: vents that stick shut, mains that sag and bang, sight glasses that clog and low water cutoffs that hold the burner off. The pitch, the vents and the water level are where that top-floor trouble usually shows up.

Crotona Park East and West Farms also have many newer townhouses and apartment buildings. Where those run on a hot water boiler with baseboard or a gas furnace, and cool with through-wall units, the failures are at circulators, zone valves, igniters, capacitors and drains rather than at the boiler itself.

Service Area: The Bronx

We repair heating and cooling equipment across the Bronx, on both sides of the Bronx River, in the neighborhoods below and the rest of the borough around them, from Crotona Park to the streets along the Cross Bronx Expressway.

  • West FarmsZIP 10460. Five and six story tenement buildings, older multi-unit homes and newer townhouses between the Bronx River and Southern Boulevard. In a walk-up on steam, cold radiators usually trace to stuck vents or a main that lost its pitch.
  • Crotona Park EastZIP 10459 and 10460. Rebuilt tenements, attached townhouses and the ranch houses along Charlotte Street. Houses with their own hot water boiler or gas furnace run into circulator, zone valve and igniter failures.
  • East TremontZIP 10460 east of Prospect Avenue, and 10457. Mostly five and six story walk-ups plus newer apartment buildings. Banging steam pipes and cold top-floor radiators point to water lying in the mains and clogged vents.
  • Van NestZIP 10460 west of Unionport Road, and 10462. Single-family homes of many styles and some tenements. An older house that kept its cast iron radiators and changed boilers can heat unevenly until the radiators and piping are balanced.

Heating and AC Questions

Is window AC HVAC?

Yes. A window air conditioner is a complete cooling system in one box: compressor, condenser coil, evaporator coil, two fans and a control board. It is repaired with the same tools and parts knowledge as a central system, which is why window and through-wall units are on our repair list.

What is a boiler in a house?

A boiler heats water, or turns it to steam, and sends that heat through pipes to radiators or baseboard. A furnace heats air and pushes it through ducts. Walk-up apartment buildings and many older houses heat with a boiler, either steam with cast iron radiators or hot water with baseboard or panel radiators.

How often should a boiler be serviced?

Once a year, before the heating season. On a steam boiler that means flushing the low water cutoff, cleaning the sight glass and checking the vents. On a hot water boiler it means checking the expansion tank, relief valve and circulator. Oil burners also need a new nozzle and filter each year.

How often should AC units be serviced?

Once a year, in spring, before the first hot week. A central system needs clean coils, a clear condensate drain and a tested capacitor. A window or through-wall unit needs its filter washed, its coils cleaned and its drain pan and slinger ring cleared of slime.
